Farms, fields, flower gardens, festivals and favorite attractions across the region serve up fresh air and autumn adventure this time of year, along with seasonal treats like apple cider donuts, pumpkin ales, fresh honey, homemade ice cream and even scrapple.

Spend a sunny weekend afternoon enjoying quintessential autumn activities like apple picking, pumpkin carving, cider sipping, horse-drawn hayrides, scavenger hunts, corn mazes, farmer’s markets and more at countryside destinations like Linvilla Orchards, Shady Brook Farm and Peddler’s Village and urban attractions including Franklin Square, Dilworth Park and Reading Terminal Market.

Admission is free for most festivals (unless noted), with charges for some pick-your-own activities, rides, mazes, food and drink.

The team at Hellerick’s Family Farm showcases agricultural ingenuity when they repurpose farm equipment for family fun as the centerpiece of their annual Fall Festival. Before (or after) heading out to pick one of thousands of pumpkins and gourds, enjoy 18 acres of fun at Adventure Farm with over 40 activities, including a five-acre corn maze, a 100-foot corn chute slide, a corn box (loose corn instead of sand!), a wagon ride, an Amish scooter track, human foosball, echo tubes, and plenty of goats, sheep and chickens. Don’t miss the fresh baked goods and cider.

Pumpkinland at Linvilla Orchards

Best for: crop mazes and country fun…

The name says it all when Linvilla Orchards’ annual Pumpkinland opens for the season. The gourd gala features a slew of daytime ticketed activities like harvest hayrides around the farm, corn and (slightly harder) haybale mazes, apple blaster target shooting, pick-your-own crops, fishing in Orchard Lake, and pony and train rides. Things get spooky after dark with moonlight hayrides around the farm or to the nearby Witch’s House, ending at a campfire with cider and marshmallows. Scarecrows in the Village at Peddler's Village

Best for: snapping selfies with scarecrow pals…

While away the hours conferrin’ with the flowers and consultin’ with the rain as Bucks County play-shop-and-dine destination Peddler’s Village presents the 45th Scarecrows in the Village event. For eight weeks, more than 100 creative and colorful locally handmade scarecrows (ranging from silly to scary, and even some famous faces) line the grounds’ brick pathways, part of an annual competition during which you can vote for your faves. The free display’s apex is the annual Scarecrow Festival (September 14-15, 2024), with scarecrow-making workshops, pumpkin painting, live music and kids’ activities.

Known for its drive-thru holiday light display, Bucks County’s Shady Brook Farm gets into spooky season, too, during the family-friendly FallFest. The annual event features hay rides, barnyard animals, kids’ games, pedal go-cars, the Barn of Horror and a Peanuts-themed corn maze, plus pick-your-own pumpkins, sunflowers and apples (sold separately). When the sun goes down, head to FallFest Fun After Dark (requires a separate ticket) with bonfires, the Moonlit Maze, the not-so-scary Eerie Illuminations Halloween Light Show Wagon Ride and live music during FallFest unWINEd weekends.

Fall Harvest Weekends at Highland Orchards

Fresh produce fills 200 acres at Highland Orchards, a working family farm in West Chester founded in 1941. During Fall Harvest Weekends, the farm comes alive with pick-your-own pumpkins and apples (with free shuttles to the fields), leisurely hayrides and wagon excursions to the five-acre corn maze and apple cannons (for a small fee benefiting Philabundance). Finish at the on-site farmers market overflowing with fruits and veggies and grab a stack of famous apple-cider donuts. The newly renamed Fintastic Pumpkin Glow fall “sea-son” event returns to Adventure Aquarium on the Delaware waterfront in Camden. Peruse the tanks of sea creatures and discover mesmerizing collections of glowing gourds in every shape and size shining above the surface or illuminating the depths among sharks, stingrays and more. New this year is a nine-foot underwater octopus shaped from pumpkins, a snorkeling scarecrow watching over the underwater pumpkin patch and sensory tables featuring pumpkin slime and more. Harvest Hayride at Arasapha Farm

Home to the super-spooky Bates Motel, Arasapha Farm in Delaware County is also home to family-friendly fun during the annual Harvest Hayride days. You’re never too young to get into the fall spirit, and Fall Festival Weekends at Bucks County’s Charlann Farms are tailor-made for the little ones. Every ticketed child receives a sugar pumpkin to decorate at the pumpkin-painting table before a free hayride to the pick-your-own patch (priced per pound). Kids two and up can enjoy activities like a jump pad, an autumn obstacle course, a straw maze, a corn toss, a corn pit, pumpkin tic-tac-toe and more. Pony rides and a corn maze are available for an additional fee.

The kid-friendly four-acre corn maze is Scooby Doo mystery-themed for 2024, complete with a maze scavenger hunt (for more fun, guess the secret word the maze is shaped as!). Then enjoy a festive hayride to the pick-your-own pumpkin patch at the 40-acre farm which dates back to the 1740s and was once owned by the family of William Penn.

Friday afternoons offer pumpkin patch strolls and animal visits for free, with a small fee for the corn maze. Harvest Days at Merrymead Farm

It’s full-day fun on Merrymead Farm during the 41st Harvest Days in Montgomery County. Weekend afternoons encompass tractor hayrides, a 900-foot cornstalk tunnel, a pumpkin jump pad, a corn bin, kids’ trains and a five-acre butterfly corn maze (with admission), plus add-ons like paintball, gem mining, and apple blasters and slingers. Friday afternoons offer a smaller experience which also include farm animal visits, and Thursday to Saturday evenings showcase a moonlight maze and after-dark hayrides. Opening night presents “The Lighting of the Great Pumpkin” featuring the fest’s centerpiece Merry the Pumpkin, a large illuminated talking pumpkin.

Lower Bucks County’s Snipes Farm promises an authentic experience at the annual Fall Festival with seasonal fun and adorable animals. Take a gentle Belgian horse wagon ride to visit all the farm animals; explore the pick-your-own pumpkin patch and flower field; or discover the Land of the Scarecrows, the giant hay pyramid and the straw bale maze. Walk the path to the bird blind, explore the nature trail or tour the Ol’ Time Farm Museum. New for 2024: a field of “scary” animatronic monsters from the adjacent haunted drive-in. Finish with cider and donuts in the Cider Barn.

The area around Morris Arboretum was once known as “Pumpkintown” — so where better to hold the yearly ArBOOretum festival? The event features the 17th annual Scarecrow Design Contest — with “Villains” as the theme for 2024 — where visitors can vote for their faves along the scarecrow walk (with prizes up to $300), plus the 100-square-foot Morris Pumpkin Cottage covered in hundreds of pumpkins at the end of the gourd-and-scarecrow lined Pumpkin Promenade. The festival’s highlight is the Scavenger Hunt & Costume Dance Party on Thursday, October 17th, 2024, the same day design winners are announced.

Century-old Trauger’s Farm, a 60-acre site in Bucks County, grows bushels of fresh produce every season for sale in their Farm Market. And each fall, the farm opens up for (a beer-free) Oktoberfest with horse-drawn wagon rides, kettle corn, pick-your-own flowers and a kid-friendly haunted greenhouse every October weekend, with balloon animals, farm animals, face painting, local volunteer fire trucks, caricature drawing and the beloved Chippy the Clown on select weekends (see website for details). The comically named None Such Farm Market in Buckingham, Bucks County, offers a bounty of fantastic fruits and vegetables each season. During October, visitors can come pick their own from the massive yield at Fall Festival Pumpkin Picking & Hayrides. Hit the fields aboard a tractor hayride to patches of pumpkins ready for picking (available for purchase) along with a slew of festive fall items like cornstalks, strawbales, gourds, ornamental corn and winter squash. The free Fall Festival set at the 18th-century Newlin Grist Mill in Delaware County is highlighted by demonstrations of historic trade skills like candle making, woodworking and milling. But that’s far from all the fun, which also includes kids’ activities, hayrides, food trucks, craft vendors at the Colonial Market, a pop-up Tavern offering locally-made beer and wine, and a Community Corner with local businesses and organizations. New for 2024, the mill’s annual archaeology festival has been incorporated into the festival with archaeological excavations and activities and displays from local historical organizations.

Held annually for 35 years, the OPC Apple Festival was created as a fundraiser and community spirit-lifter after the Oxford Presbyterian Church’s devastating 1989 Memorial Day Weekend fire. This year marks the 51st edition of the Mennonite Heritage Center’s annual Apple Butter Frolic — a fall staple in Harleysville, Montgomery County — celebrating Anabaptist/Mennonite heritage, Pennsylvania Dutch culture, and farming, food and fun. Enjoy demonstrations on how the Mennonite community lived and worked a century ago before sampling some traditional from-the-farm treats like fresh made scrapple, homemade apple fritters, shoofly pies and much more. Not one but two locations in the quaint Bucks County borough are site of the free annual Perkasie Fall Festival. The Town Center District offers live music, craft vendors, cornhole, pumpkin decorating, a fire truck, an inflatable maze, food trucks and a pie-eating contest. Pumpkinfest returns to historic TileWorks in Doylestown, a fall festival showcasing the young adults who volunteer as musical acts, artists, performers, leaders and hosts. Expect craft vendors, live music and performances, food trucks, lighted jack-o’-lanterns and a trunk-or-treat event outside the former tile factory. But the showcase attraction is the pumpkin-carving contest. Maze Days at Dilworth Park

Harvest weekends look a little different this year at Dilworth Park as City Hall’s “front yard” is transformed into the brand-new Maze Days. For 10 days, Center City District presents a fall celebration highlighting Greenfield Lawn’s popular annual Hay Maze, including kids’ storytime sessions, themed happy hours in the seasonal Air Grille Beer Garden, pumpkin carving and special appearances from Philly Goat Project. You don’t have to travel outside Center City to pick the perfect pumpkin. Bring the kids to iconic Franklin Square for the pick-your-own Pumpkin Patch, complete with event-provided pumpkins and decorating supplies to get you Halloween ready. The best part: It’s free for kids 10 and under. Come back Saturday, October 26 from 12 to 2 p.m. as the square turns into the free Trick-or-Treat Street event for the kids … with a free companion event for good doggos and puppers along Bark-or-Treat Trail, Sunday, October 27 from 12 to 2 p.m. (Capacity is limited, so advance tickets are recommended.)

Applefest at Fox Chase Farm

Dating back to 1762, historic Fox Chase Farm was purchased by the city of Philadelphia in 1975 to serve as a demonstration farm and agricultural education center. One of just two working farms within city limits, the site celebrates the fruit of the season at the annual Applefest each October. Over 3,200 attendees gather for a day of cider pressing, apple butter making, seasonal food, games, hayrides, pumpkin painting, live music, candle dipping, potato sack races, a petting zoo and fall-themed crafts, plus plenty of pumpkins and apple cider for sale.
